Where they stand on data centers

On concerns about hyperscale data centers

There are a lot of issues that have been brought up as it relates to hyperscale data centers.  First the issue of power and infrastructure use. These facilities use a lot of electricity, and people want to know what that means for our grid and long-term costs.  But, they also require a steady power source.  so if the power is irregular the data center will need to shut the outside power source off and use their stored power.  When they shut off the outside power source, the sudden stop in power to the data center will create a ripple effect with the large amounts of power demand suddenly shifting. There is also the issue of Water usage.  It has been said that in Sioux Falls they will use the closed-loop system.   But even in those systems, there can still be water loss over time due to evaporation.  And honestly, it didn't sound like this had been used or tested which leave many unanswered questions. John Kunnari presented really great data on the noise.  I will not do it justice, but he presented information on the decibels and the long-term impact of constant sound We have real concerns about land use and growth. Large hypercenter data centers can change the character of a community, especially in areas that have traditionally been residential or agricultural. People want to make sure growth is thoughtful, consistent with existing zoning, and doesn’t negatively affect nearby homes,  or long-term property values. Lastly, why are they asking council members and commissioners to sign NDA's?  We need transparency!

How they’d address those concerns

I will address citizens’ concerns about hyperscale data centers by demanding transparency, protecting taxpayers and property owners, ensuring infrastructure and water use are sustainable, and making sure any growth is carefully planned with the interests of Lincoln County residents FIRST.  And of course no NDA’s!
