Where they stand on data centers

On concerns about hyperscale data centers

Citizens want to be assured that hyperscale data centers don't hurt their communities. There are many ways these large facilities can damage communities: 1) draw so much water and electricity that utilities increase charges for nearby users to support building more capacity; 2) noise pollution via diesel generators to fill electric needs; 3) air pollution from diesel generators; 4) stark buildings in public view; and 5) vibrations that reduce public health.

How they’d address those concerns

Countries that try to stop technological innovation fail to compete on the world stage. That means we need to allow scientific and technical innovation or we will be left behind. However, that innovation must not come at the expense of our health and vitality. In the case of large data centers, people would be much more comfortable with them if all the problems described above were resolved by careful planning, public review, and good designs. Local construction and zoning boards have the power to review data center plans. If the submitted proposals are not good enough, then they should be rejected. If they are good enough, then they should be approved for the good of the community and the good of the business. Just like everything else, we need to look at this issue from various perspectives and make a reasonable decision that benefits the most people.
