Dusty Johnson was born in Pierre, South Dakota , in 1976. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of South Dakota in 1999 and a master's in public administration from the University of Kansas in 2002. He previously worked on the staff of Gov. Mike Rounds (R), chief of staff to Gov. Dennis Daugaard (R), and as vice president for Vantage Point Solution. He previously served on the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission from 2005 to 2011.
