Where they stand on data centers

On concerns about hyperscale data centers

As someone who has extensively traveled this state and spoke to thousands of people, many are rightfully concerned about the potential amount of water and electricity these centers could eat up. When you meet with the people on both sides of this issue, as I have, it is clear that there is currently no guarantee that data centers won’t cause problems for our water and electrical infrastructure twenty, thirty or fifty years down the road.

How they’d address those concerns

I believe in local control. If the citizens don’t want it, the state government shouldn’t do it. I can tell you, as the only candidate to actually visit all sixty-six of our counties, people have very little appetite for handing out massive subsidies to data centers. I believe the state should not be in the business of picking winners and losers.

Note

Toby owns a data center in Aberdeen through Plaza Rentals, LLP. Toby Doeden’s son, Jackson Doeden, applied for and received a permit to operate a 70-unit bitcoin mining facility at 605 East Drive in Aberdeen, SD, on February 10, 2020. On June 9, 2022, he applied for and received an expansion to 150 units for bitcoin mining purposes.
