Crowned Ridge Energy Storage I — PUC docket EL26-014 A 120 MW / 480 MWh battery storage facility (4-hour duration) in Codington County, applied for by Crowned Ridge Energy Storage I, LLC — an affiliate of Crowned Ridge Wind, LLC. Where: North Half of Section 11, Township 118 North, Range 51 West, at the southeast corner of 464th Avenue and 161st Street — roughly 45.0465 N, −96.9215 W. Nearest home is 16138 464th Avenue, 0.3 mile directly south. It sits inside the existing Crowned Ridge I wind facility and connects to the CRW Collector Substation by about 2,215 feet of buried medium-voltage cable. Size: 7.8-acre facility, inside a 15.4-acre fence, on a 52.7-acre project area — with a voluntary agreement over 60 acres. Cost and timing: $174 million, commercial operation expected May 2028. Where it stands: filed 14 May 2026. The county was ahead of the state — Codington County's Board of Adjustment granted the conditional use permit on 20 May 2024, two years earlier, on land owned by Crowned Ridge Wind and Dewey Zemlicka et al. The PUC intervention deadline closed 13 July 2026; party status went to Timothy and Linda Lindgren, Codington Clark Electric Cooperative, the SD Rural Electric Association, Bob Welder, and Paul and Bridget Johnson, with objections on file from Lindgren and from Staff. A public input meeting was held 1 July 2026 at the Waverly/South Shore school gym. No permit has been granted.
