Where they stand on data centers

On concerns about hyperscale data centers

Concerns about hyperscale data centers focus on strain to local utilities and resources, particularly whether our electric grid can handle large new loads and increased water use could impact long-term supply and individual rates. There are also serious concerns about noise, land use, and fit within our neighborhoods or surrounding farms. We do need to ask whether these projects provide enough local jobs to justify their footprint. These facilities should not be subsidized through tax breaks. It is questionable if these even fit into the long-term needs of Minnehaha County.

How they’d address those concerns

I will take a restrictive approach to ensure these projects only move forward if they clearly benefit Sioux Falls and surrounding communities. That starts with requiring verified capacity for power and water before approval, with developers fully funding any needed upgrades so costs are not passed on to residents. I would prioritize strict limits on water use; it is our most valuable resource. I would also enforce strong zoning and siting standards including setbacks from neighborhoods, noise limits, and compatibility with surrounding land use. Any approvals would be tied to clear, enforceable community benefits, ensuring these projects deliver significant and meaningful tax value, infrastructure investment, and long-term accountability, not just short-term construction jobs.
