Where they stand on data centers
On concerns about hyperscale data centers
Citizens are concerned about the enormous strain hyperscale data centers can place on local power grids, water resources, infrastructure, and taxpayers — especially when government subsidies or special incentives are involved. Many are also concerned that South Dakota land and communities could be transformed in ways similar to what people are seeing happen around large-scale data center development in places like Ellendale, North Dakota.
How they’d address those concerns
I think people just want to know their communities are being listened to before massive projects get pushed through. I’d want to make sure local citizens actually have a voice, that taxpayers aren’t subsidizing billion-dollar companies, and that we fully understand the impact on our land, water, power grid, and infrastructure before moving forward with anything. South Dakota shouldn’t lose its way of life because of outside interests chasing profit.
